Hoshi was just getting back to her apartment. She was still wearing the clothes she left in the night before when she headed to the night club, minus the heels she was carrying in her left hand. She winced as she got a glimpse of her messy hair in her reflection. She probably could have spent a few more minutes fixing it, but she had been pretty eager to leave that guy's house when she realized how bad a conversationalist he was out of bed. Besides, no one was going to see her…
Except for Captain Archer, who was waiting outside her door with Porthos. "I was going to see if you wanted to come to the park with us, but it looks like you've had a late night," he said, taking in her appearance. "I probably should have called first."
"Yeah, you should have," said Hoshi, focusing on unlocking her door so she didn't have to look Archer in the face. Opening the door, she stepped inside and tossed her shoes aside. She groaned when she noticed Four-Dee moving in circles and beeping continuously as if the mouse droid was voicing its displeasure with her absence.
"You can join us another time, then," said Archer, taking a tighter grip on the dog's leash as he turned to leave. "Get some rest. We'll talk later. And we really do need to talk about what you're doing with your life right now."

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Tuesday
Sep. 30th, 2014 10:55 pm"So Captain Archer finally made it official. I've been assigned to the Enterprise," Hoshi told Travis Mayweather as they set out for their run in Golden Gate Park.
"About time!" said Travis, though his enthusiasm was tempered a bit by his huffing and puffing. "Was there ever any doubt? The captain wouldn't have anyone else! He's really got a lot of faith in you."
"Let's hope he never has to regret that," said Hoshi, slowing down so Travis could catch up with her. "Geez, Travis! You need to go running with me more often. I could probably run circles around you."
"Hey, you're stationed on planet and have plenty of options for running after your shift. I've been on a series of small ships for the last 12 months. There's not a lot of place to run and I really don't like treadmills," argued Travis.
"Yet another reason to turn down this assignment and run before they actually shoot me into outer space in a tin can," said Hoshi sarcastically.
"Enterpise is definitely not some tin can! It's the largest and most advanced ship in the fleet, Hoshi," Travis corrected her. "You know, you should come with me on the next inspection tour. You're going to be living on that ship eventually. You might as well get comfortable with it."
"I've still got plenty of time," said Hoshi. "Captain Archer still doesn't even have a full crew yet. I doubt the ship will be ready for launch for at least, like, a year. I'll have plenty of time to get used to the idea."
Too bad Hoshi had no idea how little time she had left to keep her feet on the ground…

Hoshi's Quarters, San Francisco, Monday
Jun. 30th, 2014 11:12 pmHoshi was not happy.
She'd just spent two weeks on a Starfleet-mandated survival course that involved sleeping in a tent, taking orders from the most uptight lieutenant ever, and making do without running water. She was sticky, sweaty, and gross. And that was not about to change anytime soon because she'd returned to an apartment without a working shower.
"Are you kidding me? It's the 22nd century! Haven't we evolved to the point that we no longer have to shut the water off to the whole building to make plumbing repairs?" Hoshi whined to her landlord. It wasn't going to get her shower fixed anytime soon, but Hoshi had a lot of pent-up frustration to let out.

Dear friends,
Hope everything is okay where you are! I had a few days of leave time that I was going to spend on the island, except my portal got canceled for some weird reason. Finally, I decided to spend my leave in Kyoto with my family. It's been nice, even if it is a little too quietbecause they don't really talk to me.
Things have been going really well with Starfleet. I love spending hours listening to transmissions from the deep space array. Surprisingly, I haven't discovered any new languages yet but I've become extremely fluent in Vulcan.
Please let me know how you are doing. I have two more days before I head back to San Francisco and the silence at home is driving me crazy.
Love,
Hoshi

Hoshi had grand plans for celebrating the end of her combat training rotation. She had planned on hitting the 602 Club with a few other junior officers. Instead, she was lying on her couch, too exhausted to even stagger to her bedroom. And she wasn't even completely finished like most of the other ensigns. She had passed out from dehydration and missed out on the weapons test, which meant she would have to put up with that damned Lieutenant Reed for another day.
In the weeks since being released from probation and moving into her own place, Hoshi had settled into a routine. She spent her days at Starfleet Command, listening to radio transmissions and searching for patterns in the noise. Then she spent her nights at the 602 Club getting drunk.
No one said it was a quiet routine.
At the moment, she was stumbling back to her building. If she was sober, she'd be at her front door by now, but in her current state, she was struggling to remember the passcode to the lobby entrance. "Stupid high-tech security measures. I wish they'd just give us old-fashioned keys," she grumbled.

Hoshi's Quarters (For Now), Thursday
Feb. 28th, 2013 06:52 pmIt was Cadet Sato's last night in Starfleet quarters. Tomorrow, newly-promoted Ensign Sato was moving into her own off-campus apartment. Hoshi really didn't have much stuff to pack, so she was trying to kill time by sending change-of-address notifications to everyone in her contact list. It wasn't as though anyone needed her physical address in San Francisco to get in touch with her. She just wanted to mark the end of her training and the beginning of her new career with Starfleet.

Hoshi's Quarters, San Francisco, Monday
Dec. 31st, 2012 10:01 pmHoshi was not counting down to the new year, but something even better: the end of her probation. Starting at midnight, she was no longer confined to her quarters when she was off-duty. She could even go out to bars and restaurants again. She could probably play poker again, but she had a feeling that wouldn't be such a good idea again when a poker game got her into this mess.
First, though, she had to make it to midnight, and it felt like time was slowing down every time she checked the chronometer.
First, though, she had to make it to midnight, and it felt like time was slowing down every time she checked the chronometer.
With three ships returning to Earth, the base commissary was completely packed at lunch time. Hoshi couldn't blame them for wanting decent food after months of replicated or freeze-dried rations. And in a few weeks when her probation was lifted, Hoshi was heading straight to Chinatown where she could get some really good food. For now, the commissary would have to suffice.
But at least she had some company now that Ensign Travis Mayweather had returned from his final training flight. He was full of helpful advice ("Make sure you get quarters on the port-side of the ship or else the stars look like they're going backwards at warp.") as well as gossip about crew rotations.
Halfway through lunch, Hoshi had the sensation that they were being watched. She spotted an officer at another table who awkwardly picked up his tray and fled when Hoshi caught him staring. "Hey Travis, who is that guy and why does he keep looking over at us?" she asked.
"That's Lieutenant Reed. He was head of the armory on my last ship," replied Travis. "Maybe he wants martial arts tips from the cadet who broke her commanding officer's arm over a poker game. It seems your reputation proceeds you," he added with a wink.
"Shut up!" said Hoshi, punching him lightly on the arm. "Am I ever going to live that down?"
"Wait until you get into space," said Travis. "When everyone sees how well you talk to aliens, they'll forget all about your poker game."
[NFB, of course.]

Hoshi's Quarters, San Francisco, Sunday
Sep. 30th, 2012 10:10 pmHoshi was bored out of her mind.
Sure, her Starfleet training was going much better the second time around. She hadn't gotten into arguments over poker games or broken any arms. But maybe that was due to being on probation. When she wasn't on duty, she was confined to her quarters. There was no going to the 602 Club with the other cadets and officers on the weekends. She couldn't even go over to Captain Archer's apartment to see Porthos. At least they'd let her keep Four-Dee. There was no way Hoshi was giving up the last thing she had left from her relationship with Hurley.
But as tough as it was, Hoshi figured that she'd been through worse. She was willing to stick it out because she knew that life in Starfleet had to get better once she was off of probation.

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, Saturday
Jul. 1st, 2012 12:16 amThere was no particular reason for this trip to San Francisco. At least, that's what Hoshi kept telling herself. There was no reason for her to bring Four-Dee, her mouse droid, on this trip. Still, she felt like she needed to explain to someone just what she was contemplating.
"Seems like a nice place, right? It's not as warm as the Amazon, but there's less tropical bugs," she said out loud. "You'd like it better that way. No more getting dead bugs stuck in your wheels. Of course, the quarters here are smaller, but that's only until I finish training. Then I could probably get an apartment or something like a lot of the other Starfleet officers. Unless I get assigned to a ship right away -- but it could be years before that Warp 5 ship is ready. So, should I do it? Do I really want to re-join Starfleet?"
Four-Dee beeped a few times, as if to say, "Why haven't you said yes already?" Hoshi was certain it was a positive response, though, because she'd been tinkering with the droid's language programming.
"Alright, then. Let's head over there and go find Captain Archer," said Hoshi, getting to her feet.
[NFB, but definitely open for calls, texts and emails. Look, if she's talking to a droid, then Hoshi must really be starved for communication with others. OOC comments are also welcome.]

Hoshi's Quarters, Saturday
Mar. 31st, 2012 10:46 pmHoshi's next-door neighbor in the dormitory was learning to play the sitar. And since the walls were not very sound-proof, Hoshi was quickly getting very tired of listening to sitar music.
Banging on the wall and shouting insults in Hindi was not working very well in stopping the noise. Hoshi decided it was time for plan B. She hooked up her music player to external speakers, positioned them along the wall, and started blaring some vintage 20th century heavy metal. Hopefully the Mötley Crüe could keep the sitar music at bay, though it wouldn't help Hoshi's headache.

Hoshi's Quarters, Wednesday
Feb. 29th, 2012 09:48 amOverall, it seemed that Hoshi made a good choice when she moved out of her apartment and into a university dorm room. The commute was much shorter, and she had plenty of opportunities to socialize with her classmates.
However, the lack of a proper kitchen was a huge disadvantage. Today, Hoshi was craving soba noodles made according to her grandmother's recipe. The only flat surfaces in her quarters were the desk and the top of the dresser, but neither had enough space to properly roll out the dough. And without a stove, she had to resort to boiling the noodles over a hot plate that took forever to heat up.
"No wonder the restaurants around here are always so busy. It's not like they expect students to cook under these conditions," she grumbled to herself. She was almost tempted to give up and head out to get food, but there was no way that any of the local restaurants would have anything similar to soba noodles.

Hoshi's Quarters, Monday evening
Jan. 30th, 2012 08:12 pmIt probably wasn't worth it to throw popcorn at her video screen, considering how long it took to make popcorn on a hot plate. But since Hoshi was watching Rumor Gal by herself, there was no other way to express how frustrated she was with the direction the show had taken. Her university friends just didn't understand her interest in an old television program from a previous century. Not that she blamed them. It was times like this that Hoshi really missed Fandom.
But then she remembered that she had technology and Twitter on her side.
star_linguist: Hey #RumorGal fans, why are we still watching this show? I can't keep track of who is with who anymore.
star_linguist: Maybe there's something better that I should be watching?

Hoshi's quarters, September 26, 2149
Sep. 26th, 2011 11:23 pmIt was rare to for Hoshi to get non-electronic mail these days. So when she got back to her quarters and found ten small envelopes waiting for her, it got her attention. The cards inside the envelopes were even more surprising. Each of them wished Hoshi a happy anniversary.
"Anniversary of what?" she asked herself. She wasn't aware of any significance to today's date and there wasn't anything that she would celebrate this month. For a moment, she wondered if it had something to do with Hurley, but she had her doubts. There was no reason to celebrate any sort of anniversary if he was lost to her for good.
Somehow, her plans to stay in tonight no longer seemed appealing. Hoshi tossed the cards in the recycling bin and headed back down the corridor. With any luck, she could persuade one of her neighbors to accompany her to the bar. She really needed a drink.
[[NFI. "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted ten years ago today. I just couldn't let that anniversary pass without acknowledgement.]]

Kyoto, Thursday night
Jun. 30th, 2011 09:42 pmAll Hoshi wanted was some Japanese comfort food. What she got was a steaming bowl of udon noodles with a lecture from her mother on how everything she should be doing with her life. Even Hoshi's brothers were starting to look sympathetic as the lecture went on and on.
She ended up skipping the ichigo daifuku served for dessert, even if it was her favorite. She'd lost her appetite halfway through her soup. Retreating to her childhood bedroom, she checked her phone to see if there was any way Portalocity could get her an earlier portal than the one she'd booked for her return trip.

Hoshi's apartment, Monday evening
Feb. 14th, 2011 08:27 pmHoshi had gone all out for Valentine's Day since Hurley was coming to visit her. She'd cooked an elaborate meal of French food. The table was set, and all she had to do was light the candles while waiting for her boyfriend to arrive so she could serve the first course.
Hopefully she wasn't take this Valentine's thing too far, but she and Hurley did have a lot of catching up to do for the months that he was missing.
[For he who is no longer stranded on a tropical island!]

San Francisco, Sunday evening
Nov. 14th, 2010 09:45 pmHoshi was going to be sending Portalocity a strongly-worded letter after the layover she'd just endured. It wasn't fair to be stuck in a small lounge with a very good-looking Swedish guy with the most amazing voice when she had a boyfriend stuck somewhere else in time. It took every ounce of willpower she had to turn down the Swede's offer to skip her next portal and join him for a personal tour of Stockholm.
It had taken much longer than she had planned, but Hoshi finally made it to her destination in San Francisco. She doubted that the hotel she had booked held her room after all the delays she'd endured. As she walked out of the Portalocity terminal, she decided that it would be much simpler to head straight to Captain Archer's place and crash there for the night.
It didn't seem like such a good idea anymore when Captain Archer, wearing just a pair of pajama pants, opened the door to his apartment. "I thought your transportation was delayed," he said, running a hand through his mussed-up hair. "I wasn't expecting you to arrive until tomorrow morning."
"I got lucky," said Hoshi without thinking. Then she blushed as the implication of her words sunk in. "Um, maybe I should just see if they still have rooms available at the inn. You look like you're ready for bed."
"Nonsense. It's awfully late, Hoshi. I wouldn't want you roaming the streets at this hour looking for a place to stay. Why don't you come in and make yourself comfortable? I'll go make up the bed in the guest room," said Archer.
As Hoshi watched him walk away, she dropped her backpack on the floor and groaned. "There is a special kind of hell and I'm in it," she mumbled to herself.
