Something was not right in the Sato household.

Christmas was not a big deal in this century, but while she had been gone, her mother had completely embraced it. "I just felt that we should be celebrating more traditional Earth holidays," her mother had explained when Hoshi asked.

It may not have been obvious as the family celebrated Christmas Eve, but Hoshi could sense an underlying tension between her mother and father. They were talking and laughing with her brothers, but Hoshi noticed that they weren't speaking to each other. It had been that way since she heard them arguing the night before.

The hostility only got worse when Uncle Kenzo, her mother's brother, arrived. Hoshi noticed that her father was not speaking to Kenzo either and wouldn't even stay in the room with him.

While the boys were ripping into their presents, Kenzo came over with a wrapped box. "For my favorite niece," he said, handing her the box. "Tell me all about this school of yours, Hoshi-chan."

"The classes are very interesting," she said, repeating the answer that she had given her mother as she unwrapped her present, a book.

"What kind of history are they teaching you? They aren't making you learn Vulcan history, are you?" asked Kenzo.

"I didn't take history this semester," replied Hoshi, feeling a little uneasy with the questions

"You didn't? You really should take history, Hoshi. It's important to know your history. This present should help you with that," said Kenzo.

"I'll keep that in mind," said Hoshi, looking at the book. It was a biography of Colonel Green and a rather unusual one at that. As she scanned the back cover, she noted that the author was presenting Colonel Green as some kind of hero when every school child in her century knew that he was a genocidal madman.
