Hoshi was still feeling pretty gloomy. There hadn't been any word from Hurley, but she had promised that she would write once a week.

I really wish you would let me know that you're okay. Even if you're not okay, I want to hear something. I've been trying to get a portal to come see you, but Portalocity doesn't have anything available going to 2002. Arguing with them in five different languages hasn't helped.

Subject: Life after graduation

Hi guys. I hope you're doing well. I'm still trying to adjust to the idea that I'm done with high school. It feels weird not to be taking any classes, but that just leaves more time for moping cleaning and packing. I am staying in Fandom for the summer, though, so I probably shouldn't pack up everything too quickly.

After going out to do some sightseeing in Vancouver, Joan realized now would be a good time to call and check in with Hoshi with the time difference and all.

The email she had gotten from Hurley had her concerned and she wanted to follow up and see if he was okay and if Hoshi was okay.

Hoshi answered on the first ring. "Hello?" she answered tentatively, hoping that it was Hurley on the other end. Too bad she didn't check the Caller ID.

"Hey, it's Joan," she said. "I finally had a chance to check my email yesterday. Is Hurley okay?"

"I wish I knew. I haven't heard anything after that one email he sent," said Hoshi. "I can't get through to him by phone, he hasn't answered any of the emails I sent, and Portalocity doesn't have anything available at the moment. Not that I've been calling customer service every day and nagging them..."

"Oh, man," Joan said. She kind of knew how Hoshi felt after Liir being gone and out of contact for so long. "Do you want me to come back?"

"No, you don't have to. I'd have for you to interrupt your trip just for me," said Hoshi. "I could use a distraction, though. Have you been having a good time?"

"Well, if you need me, just call, okay?" Joan said. "The trip has been good so far. Vegas last week and now we're in Vancouver."

"Vancouver seemed pretty interesting from the Winter Olympics broadcasts," said Hoshi. "I should visit it one day. The same goes for Las Vegas. Now I almost wish I had gone on the trip! It would have given me something to keep me distracted."

"How are the new kids?" Joan asked. "Anyone really interesting show up?"

"I've only met one so far, but she was very interesting. She preferred to be called Story Girl," said Hoshi, smirking. "I got to reassure her that she wouldn't starve just because she couldn't cook."

"Aww, that was nice of you," Joan joked. "Has anything insane happened since I left?"

"There's a convention of gods in town, if that counts as insane," said Hoshi. "I've heard a little bit about it, but I didn't really check it out."

Joan was exceptionally glad she was not in town for that.

"Sounds like a good thing to avoid."

"I'm sure it could have been entertaining, but I wasn't in the mood," said Hoshi. "I've been mopey all week, but I think I'm ready to get back out there and do something."

"That's good," Joan said. "I know how much it sucks not knowing what's going on, but keeping busy is definitely the best thing to do. You should ask Liir to take you flying around the island."

"I could do that," said Hoshi. "And maybe I should get back to cooking. There are a lot of new kids who probably could use a good meal."

"Yeah, it's been a week," Joan said. "They're probably burnt out on eating all the junk food they want."

"I've heard that they're all eating spaghetti," said Hoshi. "I may need to introduce a little bit of cuisine diversity."

"At least spaghetti is easy and unlikely to cause a kitchen fire," Joan pointed out.

"Hehehe, yeah. I'm not eager for another fire drill," laughed Hoshi. "Still, there are some other things I can do with pasta and boiling water."

"True," Joan said. "And if you're cooking it's okay. It's just if you're trying to teach some of them to cook that you might run into problems."

"But if I teach people cooking safety, then I don't have to worry about people setting the dorms on fire," said Hoshi.

"Make sure you instill the importance of setting timers in them," Joan suggested.

"Yes! Timers are your friend when you are baking," said Hoshi. "More importantly, you shouldn't be baking anything if you're not used to cooking. Baking leaves lots of room to make mistakes."

"Absolutely," Joan agreed. "So really, it's your duty to get out in the common rooms and make sure no one is doing those things wrong."

"I will do that," said Hoshi. "You know, I really needed this pep talk. I was really feeling out of it all week."

"Wish I could have called sooner," Joan said. "But, please, keep me posted?"

"I will. The moment I hear anything, I'll send out an email," promised Hoshi.
