Finding a suit and mask for Jeff was actually a lot easier than finding her dress. After making a quick phone call, Hoshi went back to contemplating her dress options while she waited for Jeff to swing by and pick up his suit.

"Someone convinced my parents that I was gifted and needed to be taught separately from the other kids because I could learn so much faster than them," said Hoshi. "And by separately, I mean I used to go for days without seeing a single living sole other than my tutor."

"Sounds lonely", he says, frowning. "You didn't get a say in it? Even when you got older?"

"Not really, until Mr. Daniels came along and talked my parents and convinced them to send me here," said Hoshi. "I never really considered a future other than what my parents wanted."

"Well, that's fine, I guess, if you were really happy with what they wanted..."

"My mother wanted me to play the piano, but my tutor thought I could be a diplomat or an interpreter," said Hoshi. "I'm not sure what I really want, except that I don't really like the piano. I like talking to people, though."

Michael blinked. "Play the piano? Like, professionally?"

He wasn't sure why you'd need a whole separate education for that.

"Yeah," said Hoshi, frowning. "My mom's whole family is artistic. My uncle is a fancy artist and I have a really good ear for music."

"But she wanted you to have the whole academic thing too?"

"It went along with being considered a genius, I guess," said Hoshi. "My tutors thought I was amazing and kept trying to throw new stuff at me to see how fast I could learn."

"I think I'd've preferred getting left alone to learn for myself", Michael said honestly.

Which... was pretty much what he had been.

"That's one thing I've liked here. I've been able to pick my own classes and decide what I want to learn," said Hoshi. "With exceptions, of course. Mr. Daniels picked my classes for my first semester. I got a class on modeling and then one of Barney's classes."

"...yeah, I still think there's something off about your guardian", was the response to that information.

"I can't understand what he's thinking sometimes," said Hoshi. "I don't hear from him a whole lot either."

"You should probably be relieved about that. Guy sounds like a skeeze."

"A what?" asked Hoshi. That wasn't a word she heard in her English lessons.

"...kind of hard to define. But look, you're still in high school and he's making you take modelling classes and sending you those clothes you told me about. Like that."

"So he wanted me to fit in better with the other students?" asked Hoshi, still not understanding.

Michael shook his head.

"Fitting in's not important if you have to force yourself to get there."

"So, you think the Orion costume was too much?" asked Hoshi.

"Just a little bit."

"Well, I didn't wear the dress that went with it. It was a bit skimpy. The body paint worked just fine," said Hoshi.

"Yeah, but the point is, he wanted you to go out in the dress and... body paint?"

"Orions are green, so the costume came with green body paint and a dress that had a lot of holes in it," said Hoshi.

"...tell me he didn't ask for pictures of you wearing it."

"No, he didn't ask for any pictures or anything," said Hoshi.
