Hoshi Sato is from Star Trek: Enterprise, or just plain Enterprise as it was billed during its first two seasons. ENT was a prequel set about a century before the adventures of Captain Kirk in the original series. ENT was supposed to be closer to our time period, less futuristic and more accessible to non-fans than the others. It was assumed that ENT would run a full seven seasons like all the other Trek series except for the original one. Instead, ENT fell victim to network politics and producer burnout. It was cancelled after four seasons. While the show got off to a strong start, the first season was mediocre and the second season was even worse. The show went through a major reboot in its third season and in the fourth, new showrunner Manny Coto took over and turned out the show's best season, but cancellation was probably pre-ordained.

Right off the bat, I am going to warn you that ENT canon is really goofy with time-traveling characters that reveal too much and aliens from later series that show up much earlier than established in Trek canon. The Ferengi show up in the first season. The Romulans and the Borg show up in the second season. There's two species, Suliban and Xindi, who are never mentioned in later generations of Trek. Then there's a Temporal Cold War storyline where warring factions from the 31st century try to disrupt the timeline by screwing with Earth's first deep-space mission to change history. At one point, an alien faction manages to change the outcome of WWII and our heroes have to go back in time to set history right. It all ends with an finale entitled "These Are The Voyages..." that some fans still refuse to accept as canon. Others believe that ENT, because the of intervention of future aliens, exists in an alternate timeline from Trek as we know it.

One day, Hoshi is going to be the communications officer on the NX-01, the first ship from Earth capable of reaching Warp Five. Hoshi is an exo-linguist who is going to develop the linguacode that will be used for the Universal Translator, so she's really important in the history of Star Trek.

Hoshi also has a pivotal role in the Xindi mission when the Earth was in danger of being destoyed. During the third season of Enterprise, Earth was attacked by a probe from a species called the Xindi. The initial attack killed seven million people. The NX-01 was sent to a region of space known as the Delphic Expanse that even the Vulcans hadn't yet explored. Their mission was to find the Xindi home world and stop a second probe that could destroy Earth. As the probe was being launched, the Xindi-Reptilians beamed Hoshi off the bridge of the Enterpise. They were impressed with her skills and needed her to decrypt the three launch codes needed to deploy the weapon. When Hoshi could not be persuaded to help them, they infected her with a neural parasite to gain access to her mind. Hoshi fought back, scrambling the codes further, even attempting suicide at one point so they could not get into her head. They succeeded in getting the codes from her and deployed the weapon, but Hoshi was rescued. Still extremely weak from her ordeal and suffering from the effects of the parasites, Hoshi accompanied her captain aboard the Xindi weapon and translated enough of the blueprints so that he could destroy it.

So that is what's in her future. For now, Hoshi is going to a real school for the very first time. She has a genius IQ and has been taught by tutors all her life because they thought a regular school would hinder her development. It backfired. Hoshi is exceptionally bright, but she's been in isolation since childhood and has no friends. She has no social skills and doesn't know how to get along with people yet. She's going to come across as anti-social at first, but she'll want to make some new friends because she has none back home.

Because of her lonliness, Hoshi started studying languages as a way of connecting to other people. When she joins the Enterprise at age 22, she'll be fluent in about 40 languages. For now, she can speak just about every living language on Earth as well as Latin and ancient Greek. She will be your new BFF if you speak a language that she doesn't know already.

Hoshi's skill with languages is aided by super-sensitive hearing. She also has another fun skill in listening to a person's speech patterns and then telling them where they grew up. OOC, you can let me know this so Hoshi can surprise your character, and for those who aren't from the Earth she knows, she'll be stumped.

Hoshi is also claustrophobic and very fearful, not what you'd expect from someone serving on a starship, so she'll be working to overcome both handicaps. She once boasted to her captain that she was a good girl who never got sent to the principal's office, but then again, she supposedly never went to a real school in canon. She also got kicked out of Starfleet training for breaking her commanding officer's arm after getting caught arranging a poker game for the new recruits.

Appearance-wise, she's a young Japanese woman with long black hair that is usually pulled back. She's played by the very lovely Linda Park, but Hoshi's beauty is going to be turned down a bit.

After coming to Fandom, Hoshi's started coming out of her shell. Initially, talking to others was nearly painful, but she's comfortable talking to other students. She also avoided groups until she survived homecoming, and now she makes an effort to be social. She's also made some really good friends including Robin, who is teaching her to speak Frog. Still, old habits die hard and Hoshi still suffers from the occasional panic attack after spending time with large crowds of people.

I'm not going to talk about the AU versions of Hoshi, but I am going to point you to Memory Alpha's biography of her Mirror Universe twin.

Just so I can cover my other character as well, Mary Connell's info post is here with some new updates.
