Room 423, Tuesday evening

Hoshi was sitting on her bed, holding a pencil and looking it over very closely. Of course she had seen pencils before. Her beloved grandfather had used them even after data padds became widely available. She just never thought that she would get to use one.

The welcome picnic had certainly been an eye-opening experience. Her first two classes had been completely different for what she had prepared. Still, she was making friends for the first time. The people here were really nice. It was almost enough to make her forget that she needed to find a way to obtain currency.

Now that the weekend was over, and classes had been going on for a few days, Sam decided he should probably check on Hoshi, to see how she was doing. He peered past the door for a moment, and knocked.

"Come in!" Hoshi called out. She put the pencil away with all the other supplies that she purchased on Sunday.

"Hey," Sam said, smiling. "How's it going?"

"There are still a few things I'm trying to get used to, like currency, but I think I'm doing okay," said Hoshi. "I survived the first day of classes and managed to buy school supplies appropriate for this century."

"Mmmm, school supplies," Sam replied, like the giant geek that he was. "So you haven't had any trouble getting settled in? 'Cause I'm glad to hear that."

"Apparently I'm not the only one from the wrong time period," said Hoshi. "A lot of people were very sympathetic. Plus the girl at the store was happy to explain all the different amounts of currency notes. I may have to get a job, though, to get more currency once I run out."

"Lots of people have jobs, so you definitely wouldn't be alone. Do you have any idea what you want to do?" he asked.

"Not yet," said Hoshi. "A lot of people have given me suggestions, though. I was going to take a look around town tomorrow since I don't have any classes."
