Room 423, Thursday morning

Hoshi had spent her Wednesday sleeping off the massive hangover that came with doing shots with Amber. But after spending a day in bed, she just didn't want to get up at all. Not even when Porthos jumped up on the bed and started licking her face to remind her that it was time for her to feed him.

"Alright, already. Silly dog," groaned Hoshi. Her head still hurt, but she still had a lot of stuff to do today, and a dog to feed.

Hinata glanced up from where she was sitting cross-legged on the floor and pulling a string for Yei to play with.

"Are y-you feeling better, Hoshi-san?"

"A bit," said Hoshi, sitting up in bed. "A word of advice, though. Drinks that come in tiny glasses tend to be stronger than the ones in bottles and mugs."

She shuddered a little bit. "I d-doubt I would have need to remember that, but I w-will keep it in mind. Did you w-want me to g-get you anything?"

"I think I'll manage," said Hoshi, giving Hinata a weak smile. "Besides, it's probably my fault for trying to ignore the stuff that's really been bothering me since the weekend. My friend Jonathon gave me some really unexpected news."

"Oh?" She flushed. "I m-mean, if you don't mind t-talking about it..."

"Jonathon, the captain, wants me to be on his crew when his ship leaves on a deep-space exploration mission. It'll be the very first one from my world," said Hoshi.

"The problem is that if I go through officer training after graduation, I won't finish in time for their projected launch date."

Hinata blinked, and Yei used the moment of distraction to leap for the string.

"You're l-leaving early?" she asked, dismayed.

"Not right away, but next summer," said Hoshi. "I'll get to finish out my junior year here, but then I'll have to do my senior year there while also doing officer training."

"Is t-that what you want?" Hinata asked cautiously.

Hoshi was hesitant to answer, because she didn't really know for herself.

"I don't like the idea of giving up my senior year. I really like this place," said Hoshi. "At the same time, I don't think I should give up this opportunity if I get it."

She nodded. "And it's n-not a choice you thought you w-would have to make?"

"No," said Hoshi. "Even better, I think the captain just assumed I would jump at the opportunity."

"...would y-you have? At one point?"

"I think it would have been a tough decision no matter when he asked," said Hoshi. "I'm really fond of this place. I was looking forward to graduating with my friends and everything."

She nodded. "Are t-there any other o-options?"

"I can say no, that I want to finish school here and get an assignment on a later mission," said Hoshi.

"There's still the possibility that the captain's superiors won't let me enter their training program before I graduate. According the the captain, I'm the only candidate who's still in high school."

"What do you t-think you'll do?"

"I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens. If I get in, I'll have to decide what matters more to me: senior year or being on the first NX-class ship," said Hoshi. "But in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy every moment I have here."

"Sounds l-like a plan."

Hoshi smiled as well. "Well, whatever happens, I'm a communications expert. Even after I leave this place, you'll still hear from me all the time."

"And be glad f-for it," she agreed.

"Good," said Hoshi. "It's a shame I didn't get to meet your guests last weekend. Did you enjoy seeing them?"

"It w-went better than I had thought," she said lightly. "I was p-pleased enough w-with that."

"That's great!" said Hoshi. "Sometimes, that's all you can ask for."
